Again apologies for the shoes, like the last one didn’t need the whole image. Stock photos from http://mjranum-stock.deviantart.com. Kristen Bell is the model.

Catwoman Download

New Catwoman Download available, feel free to use in your own fan art. This was the Catwoman from my Batman 3 posters, if you’re wondering about the footwear I originally never planned to have the whole character shown, so I didn’t bother manipulating a decent pair of shoes on her, but if you think she’d be better suited with some Nike’s, go for it!

I took the liberty of removing the whip to give people their own options as to what they want to do with her right hand. Stock images from http://mjranum-stock.deviantart.com. Marion Cotillard is the model.

Sub-Zero Portrait

A change of pace, this was something I knocked up over the weekend in about 7-8 hours, there’s a new Mortal Kombat game coming out, and what better way to celebrate than to do an image of one of MK’s favourite characters.

Done in Painter using Gouache, Airbrush and Tinting Brushes with a touch of Photoshop for some added textures, I used mostly Scratchy and Worn textured brushes as I wanted a rougher edge to this design to suit the character.

Workshop 2 – Details, Details!

Smooth or rough? Glossy or matte? Patterns or flat? These are some of the questions that go through my head when coming up with a design, but really the main question is: How much detail should I add?

I have a tendency to go overboard when it comes to details, every nook and cranny with some form of texture or pattern or highlight, really I don’t need to it but it’s sort of become a habit. So do you need to go to the extent I do? Depends on where you want to take your design, if you’re going for as realistic as possible then it might be worth the extra few hours work. You do need patience, in fact I’d probably suggest it’s best to detail over several sessions and not try and cram everything in a single one. But detailing can also be the fun part, you might stumble across a pattern or design elements that you never thought of before, you really can get on a role when it comes to detailing. The Property of a Lady Teaser

Something a bit different, in honor of 007 once again gracing our screens I’ve decided to do a mock up for a potential future James Bond release. For those unaware the title comes from one of the Bond short stories in For Your Eyes Only, always surprised me that they haven’t used this title yet.

This was only a quick job, didn’t really do all that much to it, used one of the promo shots from Casino Royal as my main image, also followed the recent trend of adding the 007 logo within the title logo.

Wonder Woman Movie Banner

Just to compliment my recent teaser poster design.

DC Trinity Sketch

Had this hidden away on my hard drive for well over a year until I stumbled across the other day, I was always going to paint this, but never got around to it. I figure, now’s a good time to finish it. Not sure when it’ll get done, hopefully before the end of the year depending on other commitments, I’ll probably have to fix the Wonder Woman costume a bit too to be more inline with my current design, and I’m not quite sure what to do with the background yet either, but I’ll work something out. I’m thinking Oils maybe?

Workshop 1: Character Design

I’m not a massive fan of ‘How To’s’ coz generally when you follow them, your finished work still doesn’t turn out right, so instead of telling you “You’ve got to do this, you’ve got to do that”, I’ll simply explain the process I go through in creating something.

There won’t be any “Set Opacity level to 75%” type of nonsense, really the only thing I will say is you should just play around as much as you can, try things out to see if they’ll work, don’t be afraid to use weird textures or patterns, you might stumble across a few Happy Accidents. If your designs don’t come out the way you want them, don’t despair, it takes a while to get good at something, I’ve had my share of failures too! Please note this is done in Photoshop using a Intuos 3 Wacom Tablet (which I’ll discuss in a latter workshop), but most of this can be done in software like GIMP as well, however I won’t be going into any great details about the software so if you don’t know anything about Photoshop (or similar programs), things may get confusing. Here I’ll detail a very basic set up for doing a character using a recent Wonder Woman creation I posted, even though it’s only 12 steps, it’s an abbreviated version on the process and thus isn’t as easy as it may seem. The original goal was to create a more grounded version of the costume, something that looked a lot more credible than her usual outfit. This workshop contains tasteful nudity, anybody offended needs to either skip this or learn to grow up. Continue reading ‘Workshop 1: Character Design’
